About BestSweet

BestSweet traces its roots back to the Durban Confectionery, Coffee & Spice Works (Pty) Ltd, founded in 1931 by Hymie Zulman in the city of Durban, South Africa, which lies on the warm Indian Ocean coastline and in the heart of sugar cane country. A tradition of industry leadership and excellence saw it surpass other long-established candy multinationals to become the largest candy company in South Africa, employing 3,000 people in its 1.7 million square feet of facilities.

By the 1970s the company was already exporting to over 50 countries worldwide. But deciding to expand its manufacturing base internationally, in 1976 it acquired the Four Star Candy Company in New Jersey, establishing a Beacon Sweets presence in the USA. By 1988 the company had outgrown the New Jersey facility and relocated to a 40 acre green-fields site in Mooresville, NC.

By the end of the 1990s, the US company was independent of the South African company and became 'BestSweet Inc' in 2001. This fitted the company's transformation into a leading developer and manufacturer of confectionery-based consumer healthcare products, a field in which BestSweet continues to excel and provide an ever expanding suite of solutions.
